2002 FEMA Grant
In the spring of 2002 myself and a group of firefighters set out to try and tap some of the federal money that was becoming available to improve fire equipment. We did research and attended some workshops. It took many hours but it paid off. We received $182,000.00. The feds portion was 90% $164,000.00 and the township matched 10% $18,200.00. We are very grateful for the funds.
We were able to updated some very old equipment that was obsolete and worn out. We desperately needed Personal Protection Equipment. That is helmets, coats, pants, boots and air packs. We were using hand me downs from the former base. Our jaws of life were very old and in need of repair. We need new hose badly. We did not have a computer or software that most departments had, the federal and state now required fire reports to file via computer. The pagers that alert us when there is a fire call were wore out over 15 years old, and not working well. The mobile radios in our trucks years past their life expectancy and outdated technology. We needed updating on extrication skills and aircraft firefighting. The tabs below will detail the new equipment, again our thanks to Oscoda Twp and Federal Emergency Managment Administration.                                                 Jeff Shue
