The permit system has been responsible for greatly reducing the wildfires in our area. Law enforcement from the area, along with the US Forest Service and the DNR help greatly. Local firefighters help keep an eye out, and put out fires left by campers. There is aircraft patrolling when fire danger is of concern. Fines for burning without a permit can range to $500.00 and suppression costs as well as replanting costs can be yours. Find more information at www.fs.fed.us/ and www.michigan.gov/dnr/ The Iosco County Burning Permit line, effective March 20, 2007- All burning permits, must be obtained from the State Department of Natural Resources. You must obtain a permit on-line by going to www.michigan.gov/ DNR then clicking on Forest, Land and Water then selecting Forest, Management and Planning and then clicking on burn permits.
You may also call for a permit between 8 AM and 8 PM the number is 1-866-922-BURN (2876). If you are in Grant or Plainfield townships, you must contact the township hall. Due to State law there is absolutely no burning allowed at all within the cities of Whittemore, East Tawas or Tawas City.
